amalgamated and Mr. S.P. Smeeton who had been Registrar General since the department’s establishment was appointed Deputy Keeper of the Records.  On Mr. Smeeton’s retirement in 1908 the Office of Registrar and Titles was amalgamated with the Record Office/Registrar General Dept. and Mr. David Balfour – who had succeeded Mr. Smeeton – also became Registrar of Titles.  He was the only Registrar General and Deputy Keeper to have this title for after his death in 1922 the Titles Office once again became a separate department.
