This book has been the foremost guide to the wealth of Public Records Office (PRO) sources available to those researching the West Indies, and interested in tracing their West Indian ancestry. The aim of the guide is to describe the most important records in the Public Records Office in England for the study of West Indian family history. These sources (which cover the documents of the Colonial Office as well as life cycles, migration, land and property, slaves and military service) can also be used to study the social, economic and military history of the British West Indies from the time of their settlement in the 16th century to the 20th century. ‘Tracing Your West Indian Ancestors’ is not intended to be a guide to general genealogical sources or techniques. However, the book is useful for providing some general guidance to help start your research. Some of the useful records for research in West Indian history and ancestry include: Acts Sessional Papers Government Gazettes Blue Books of Statistics Passenger Lists Naturalization and Passports Slave Records (Slave Registry and Slave Compensation Commission) Transportation Records American Loyalists Records Military, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Royal Air Force and Merchant Navy Records Records of the West Indian Regiments First World War battalion war diaries First World War campaign medal rolls Second World War battalion war diaries Naval Offices Returns Newspapers Registers of Correspondence Registers of Out-Letters
