The various Finding Aids in the Jamaica Archives are prepared with the objective of allowing researchers easy access to information. These Aids fall into two categories in keeping with our holdings, as outlined below:
A. Aids for Archival Materials
B. Aids for published works
A. FINDING AIDS FOR ARCHIVAL MATERIALS
Archival materials, as defined by the Archives Act (1983), are “all official records no longer in current use and adjudged by the (Archives) Committee to be worthy of permanent preservation in the Jamaica Archives for reference and historical purposes”. Apart from these records which are transferred from Government Ministries, Agencies and Departments, the holdings of the Jamaica Archives includes private records from individuals and organisations as well as records from several religious denominations.
The Finding Aids for archival materials are structured around the different categories/collections of records in the custody of the Jamaica Archives. The records have been organised into five (5) main categories, namely, Central Government, Local Government, Statutory Bodies, Private and Ecclesiastical. Each category has indices which assist the researcher in identifying the information in that particular category. In addition to general indices for these main categories, there are indices for individual series of records and subject indices.
The indices provide an historical overview of the creating agencies, the types of records included in each collection and the dates when they were created. Individual entries in the indices provide information on the reference code/number, the description of the item and the date of creation.
