Page 3 of 11 INDICES FOR THE FIVE MAIN CATEGORIES OF RECORDS
1. Central Government Records (1/) – The indices for these records fall into four (4) groups, some of which are further broken down into sub-groups or series as outlined below:
a. The records which originated in the Colonial Secretary’s Office (CSO) form the earliest of the Central Government records (1B/5). They include minutes of The House of Assembly, The Council (later the Privy Council) and the Legislative Council. Included amongst these records are the Despatches to and from the CSO to England, British Honduras, Turks Islands and the Bay Islands. Correspondence from the CSO after the Morant Bay Rebellion up to the mid 1940’s are also included in this collection. They are listed in two volumes labelled Central Government – C.S.O
b. Those records (1B/11) are from the Island Record Office (I.R.O.), which took over custody of the records after the Island Secretary’s Office was abolished in 1879. They are listed in volumes labelled “Central Government – I.R.O”. The records date back to 1661 and include series such as
i. Inventories of Estates (1674 – 1881) – There are 3 separate indices for these records (1B/11/3) with volumes 1, 2 & 3 on microfilm. These are records listing the enrolments of inventories of estates of deceased property owners.
ii. Crop Accounts of the Plantations (1740 – 1927) – There are 3 indices for these records with Volume 2 on microfilm (1B/11/4). These are volumes containing information on the accounts of “all the rents, issues, profits, proceeds and produce” on the estates. These accounts were prepared in accordance with “An Act for preventing frauds and breaches of trust by attorneys or agents of persons absent from the island, and by trustees, guardians, executors and administrators acting for and on behalf of minors and others…”.
iii. Current Accounts of the Plantations (1809 – 1957) – there are 2 indices relating to these, namely Vol. 1-12 and Vol. 1-54. This series (1B/11/5) relate to accounts pertaining to the operations of deceased persons estates, estates with mortgages and those of absentee proprietors.
