Page 7 of 11 2. Local Government Records (2/) – There is one main index to this collection. These records relate to the administrative procedures of Vestries, Municipal Boards, Parochial Boards and Parish Councils which make up the Local Government Collection.
This collection consists of records relating to the administrative procedures of the parishes, which are the units of local government administration. Originally each parish was governed by a Vestry and when Kingston became a city in 1802 the Vestry was replaced by a Mayor, Alderman and Common Council. In 1866 when Crown Colony Government was introduced into the island, the Vestries and Common Council were abolished and Municipal Boards established.
The Municipal Boards were abolished in 1886 for all parishes except Kingston and replaced by Parochial Boards. Kingston at that time received a Mayor and Corporation. In 1923, the parishes of Kingston and St. Andrew were united under one local Government Authority, the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC), with a Mayor and Council. In 1956, the 13 Parochial Boards became Parish Councils.
The records include minutes of meetings, tax rolls and accounts for these local government entities. NB. For a listing of The Vestry Minutes and other records for the Parish of St. David, (1785 – 1852) one of the original parishes of the island, see the Local Government – IRO (1B/11) index.
