Tribute to Miss Elizabeth Williams PDF Print E-mail
Miss Elizabeth WilliamsThe Jamaica Archives & Records Department pays tribute to Miss Elizabeth Williams, Government Archivist 1987 – 2002 who died after a period of illness on June 17, 2007.

Miss Williams joined the staff of the Jamaica Archives & Records Department in 1976 and held many positions before she succeeded Mr. Clinton Black as Government Archivist in 1987. For a profile see the interview with her in Archives Link vol.2 #1 2006, page 5.

She was very involved in the establishment of a records management programme and she was the first manager of the Government Records Centre which was established in 1980 as a part of the Department. She will therefore be remembered for her work in this area. Among her other achievements was the promotion and establishment of a career path for records and information managers in government entities.

Ms Williams was the founder of the Government Records & Information Managers Network (G-RIM) in February 1997, a voluntary association of records managers in government entities.

From 1996 until she left the Archives in March 2002 to assume the position of University Archivist at the University of the West Indies, she was very involved in preparations for the Access to Information programme. This was because the Government had given the Department responsibility to prepare government entities for its implementation.

Miss Williams was passionate about her work and dedicated her life to this area. She will be missed not only in Jamaica but in the wider Caribbean as she was very involved in the regional archives body, CARBICA – the Caribbean Archives Association.

May She Rest in Peace
